Headaches are a painful condition that many people experience – an estimated 45 million Americans suffer from chronic headaches annually! These headaches can range from mild or severe and can be short-lived or persistent for hours, days, or even months. While some people only experience mild headaches such as those that are caused by stress, others experience severe headaches and even migraines. One thing is certain though – any type of headache is unpleasant and painful.

Types of Headaches and Their Causes

The kinds of headaches we experience can be very different, depending on what causes them and what symptoms they produce. The three most common headaches are:

    • Tension Headaches: cause mild to moderate generalized pain on one or both sides of the head and neck. They can be triggered by sleep disturbances, stress, straining of muscles in the neck and scalp, and eye strain. Tension headaches are the most common type of headache and typically recur.
    • Cluster Headaches: can be a more painful headache than tension headaches. Cluster headaches generally cause extreme pain on one side of the head or around one eye. They are not associated with any triggers like stress, hormones, or sleep, and their cause is not known. Cluster headaches generally occur in a series of attacks that come and go intermittently for over several weeks to even months. After the “cluster” of headaches subsides, they will return again after some time with no warning.

  • Migraines: pain can range from moderate to severe, and may occur on one or both sides of the head. Sometimes migraine pain is described as throbbing or pulsing. There can be many triggers for migraines, including stress, sleep changes, certain foods, too much or too little caffeine, and menstruation. Often migraine pain is debilitating, taking anywhere from hours to days to subside.

Other headache triggers may include: illness, environmental factors such as noise or pollutants, hormonal changes, overactivity, and weather changes.

Treating Headaches With Chiropractic Care

Many people resort to temporary solutions to treat their headaches with over-the-counter medications or even prescription medications. However, these solutions will not solve headache problems in the long run. Chiropractic care has proven to be a highly effective solution to healing headache pain permanently.

Through chiropractic care, headaches can be treated with spinal manipulation and gentle adjustments that help promote proper alignment and relieve tension in the muscles of the back and neck. Your chiropractor can also show you how to maintain proper posture and exercises to help prevent headaches or reduce your headache pain.
